Mario Novak

Mario Novak received his PhD in Roman period archaeology (bioarchaeology) at the University of Zagreb. From 2013 to 2015 he stayed at the University College Dublin in Ireland as a post-doctoral researcher working on a project studying general health, diet and population history of early medieval inhabitants of Croatia and Ireland. At the moment, he is a Senior Research Associate at the Institute for Anthropological Research in Zagreb, Croatia, and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Primorska, Koper, Slovenia. His research is focused on the reconstruction of various aspects of life (and death) of ancient populations from Central and South-Eastern Europe through a study of human skeletal and dental remains by using a combination of conventional (bio)archaeology and paleopathology with ancient DNA and stable isotope analyses. He is the PI of the Croatian Science Foundation project “Bones, isotopes and genes: Health, diet and ancestry of the Roman period inhabitants of Croatia” and collaborator on several domestic and international research projects. Since 2023 he was the Secretary of the Paleopathology Association.
